WVRTC and NASA Personnel Visit Underground Mine Site

Roof bolting is a unique procedure used in underground coal mining to secure mined areas and passages from collapsing and creating catastrophic disasters.   Roof bolting has been refined and streamlined over decades of use to quickly instill safety and optimize coal harvesting operations.

Personnel from the WV Robotic Technology Center and NASA GSFC & HQ donned hard hats, overalls, and safety equipment to travel deep below the Earth’s surface to study mining procedures and the hardware involved.  The teams used the chance to observe mining operations in practice in order to draw possible similarities between Earth underground drilling to what might be required in similar processes involving capture and analysis of space assets.
